Alzheimer’s is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States and at present cannot be cured, prevented or slowed. Dealing with a family member diagnosed with Alzheimer’s can be one of the most challenging events in one’s lifetime. The Alzheimer’s Association offers a 24/7 helpline for caregivers who are encouraged to find a support group to help them with the day-to-day challenges. There are good days and bad days, but at the end of the day the poem below can guide you to be strong.
A Poem from an Alzheimer’s Patient
DO NOT ASK ME TO REMEMBER, DON’T TRY TO MAKE ME UNDERSTAND. LET ME REST AND KNOW YOU’RE WITH ME, KISS MY CHEEK AND HOLD MY HAND.
I’M SO CONFUSED BEYOND YOUR CONCEPT, I AM SAD AND SICK AND LOST. ALL I KNOW IS THAT I NEED YOU, TO BE WITH ME AT ALL COST.
SO DO NOT LOSE YOUR PATIENCE WITH ME, DO NOT SCOLD OR CURSE OR CRY. I CAN’T HELP THE WAY I’M ACTING, CAN’T BE DIFFERENT THOUGH I TRY.
JUST REMEMBER THAT I NEED YOU, THAT THE BEST OF ME IS GONE. PLEASE DON’T FAIL TO STAND BESIDE ME, LOVE ME ‘TIL MY LIFE IS GONE.
